How to play chess for beginners?

Chess is a two-player strategy game played on an 8×8 grid. Each player has 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective is to checkmate your opponent’s king, putting it in a position where it can’t move without being captured.

Here are the basic rules:

  1. Pawns move forward one square but capture diagonally.
  2. Rooks move vertically or horizontally.
  3. Knights move in an L-shape: two squares in one direction, then one square at a right angle.
  4. Bishops move diagonally.
  5. Queens can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  6. Kings move one square in any direction.

Additional rules:

  • Castling allows you to move the king and one of the rooks simultaneously.
  • En passant lets a pawn capture another pawn that has just moved two squares forward.
  • Pawn promotion lets a pawn become any other piece upon reaching the opponent’s back rank.
